Amazon Lovefest: Music store and S3
Yet another reason to dig Amazon … A few months back when Amazon debuted the DRM-free MP3′s, they also released software to download the MP3′s from their site. This downloader wasn’t essential for individual tracks, but was necessary to download entire albums. Guess what happened when I wasn’t looking? They made good on their promise [...]
High Speed Goodness and other nerdy things
I, for one, welcome my new AT&T overlords … Ahhh … that’s more like it! Tomorrow, it’s goodbye DirecPath. Sure I’ll miss DirecTV, but I’ll be a customer again when I’m in my house. I had a slight wiring problem that AT&T had to fix, but now I’m on the Net at a respectable speed. [...]
Ubuntu Roundup: backups, encryption, and what’s new
What I’m currently reading and implementing: Incremental (and encrypted) backups for your filesystem to Amazon’s S3 with duplicity. Read more here and here. How to setup an encrypted filesystem in Ubuntu – Here’s a great how-to and here’s the main site of the encryption project. How to backup your files with TimeVault – Not as [...]
Linux and the online desktop
Havoc Pennington of GNOME fame has a very interesting write-up over on his blog about the notion of the online desktop. It’s a good read and raises a lot of interesting points.
Behold the Gutsy Gibbon
Engadget asks “So how are you liking the new version of Ubuntu Linux?” Very well, thank you. Even though I can do an upgrade in place, I usually do a fresh install. I also end up blowing away the various configs for some of the more esoteric settings so I can see what the new [...]
Laborious Day
Goodbye cable, hello DirecTV … sort of My cable company’s acquisition by DirecTV is now complete and I’m now a DirecTV customer by way of DirecPath. My apartment complex has several master dishes and we all have receivers and my programming is provided by DirecTV but I get different pricing by going through DirecPath. It’s [...]
I Love VMware Workstation 6.0
Posted by Brian in linux, technology on July 9, 2007
Oh VMware, how I love thee! Let me count the ways … See that? I can present my USB devices at will to my psuedo-XP environment. I admit it, I like Paint Shop Pro better than the GIMP and since I have to provide tech-support on Paint Shop Pro to my parents, I still like [...]
Google goes Native with Linux

Google Desktop is out for Linux now, which is kind of neat seeing how they wrote their own indexing engine under Linux and don’t use Beagle. Also, Google now distributes Linux. Weird but true. (via sogrady)
The Summit!
Posted by Brian in Uncategorized, linux, technology, traveling on May 13, 2007
I am back in Atlanta after spending the better part of a week in San Diego for the Redhat Summit and it was a great experience. Tuesday My coworker Eric and I carpooled to the airport. He too believes in arriving a couple hours ahead of time to avoid traffic, long lines, or unexpected re-enactments [...]
Dell to Sell Ubuntu pre-installed on laptops and desktops
Dell picks Ubuntu for Linux PC’s – I’m pleased (and surprised) that Dell is doing this. I guess those razor-thin margins on PC’s are forcing the company to be a little more creative in trying to drum up new business. I also approve of their Linux distribution of choice, even though I’m a little irked [...]
